Ear Hear: Can hearing aids improve the brain structure?

Previous studies have shown that among the elderly, there is a correlation between the poor hearing thresholds and the smaller brain tissue volume. There are several possible causal mechanisms about the above associations, one of which is to deprive hypothesis. If hearing deprivation will cause brain capacity, it can be assumed that the hearing aid will slow down the brain capacity by restoring hearing.

Recently, researchers from the Netherlands published an article in the “Ear Hear” magazine, investigating the regulatory role of the hearing aids in the above assumptions.

The researchers conducted a cross -section research and based on the elderly. The use of hearing aids is evaluated by interviews, and hearing loss is quantified through pure sound testing. The use of magnetic resonance imaging measured the total volume, gray matter and white mass, and white matter integrity of the brain [each directional opposite sex (FA) and average diffusion rate]. Studies only include participants with purely pure sound (PTA1, 2, 4) ≥35db HL at 1, 2 and 4KHz. The use of linear regression analyzes the relationship between hearing loss and brain capacity and white matter integrity. The interaction between the use of hearing aids and PTA1, 2, 4 is listed as an independent variable, and the age, gender, hearing, and magnetic resonance are performed on the model Time, education level, and cardiovascular risk factors between imaging.

It was found that among the 459 participants, the average age (scope) was 70.4 (52 to 92) and 41%were women. The age and gender distribution of hearing aid users (n = 172) are not significantly different from participants who do not use hearing aids. PTA1, 2, 4 is related to the lower FA, but it has nothing to do with the difference in the total volume of the brain, the volume of gray matter, the volume of white matter, or the average diffusionability of the brain. The use of hearing aids has nothing to do with the interaction between PTA1, 2, 4, and any other measurement results. Additional analysis shows that the interaction between hearing aids and age is related to lower FA.

In summary, the relationship between listening loss and brain structure among the elderly people did not find evidence that the hearing aid had regulated it. However, in the relationship between age and whiteness integrity, the use of hearing aids does have a regulatory effect. In addition, future vertical research needs to be further verified.
