Recently, researchers at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Vancouver Coast Health Institute (VCHRI) have identified a key enzyme that causes eczema, which may lead to better treatment.
The study was recently published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.
Eczema, also known as the characteristic dermatitis (AD), will cause the skin’s protection barrier to rupture and make it more vulnerable to the damage of foreign objects. These foreign objects will cause the skin’s protection barrier to itching, inflammation, dryness and further degradation.
The senior author of the research, a professor of UBC Medical Department, and Dr. David Granville, a VCHRI researcher, said: “The frequent symptoms of eczema make it difficult for patients to go out or work outdoors. It is estimated that due to eczema, the annual economic loss in North America exceeds 5.5 billion Dollar.”
Granzyme B enzymes are correlated with the itching of eczema and the severity of the disease. Researchers found that Granzyme B weakened the skin barrier by cutting the protein that combines cells, making it easier for allergens to penetrate.
Granville said: “There are proteins that close them together between our skin cells. In some inflammatory diseases, such as eczema, Granzyme B is secreted from the cells and explained the above protein, which leads to weakening the connection between the cells. The skin becomes easily inflamed and itchy. “
Researchers have found that through genetic modification and knockout Granzyme B or to suppress its activity with local gels, it can prevent its destruction of skin barriers and significantly reduce the severity of the disease.
Granville said: “Previous research showed that Granzyme B in patients with dermatitis was related to itching and the severity of the disease; however, there was no evidence that the enzyme had any pathogenic effect.” Drugs to Granzyme B can be used to treat eczema and other forms of dermatitis. “
